This years Charles Sharpe Beecher Prize has been awarded to LUCAS Research Associate, Dr Cunjia Liu, for his paper, 'Explicit non-linear model predictive control for autonomous helicopters'. This paper explains the use of an explicit model-predictive control method to perform trajectory tracking for autonomous helicopters, demonstrating advantages of lower complexity and higher reliability compared with traditional non-linear methods.
Dr Liu's paper was selected as the winner by the Aerospace Division of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and he will be presented with this award (and a cash-prize of £300) in a ceremony to be held at the IMechE's Headquarters in London, in May.
Congratulations to Cunjia for this fantastic achievement.
Dr Liu's paper is available on-line and was published in 'Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part G. Journal of Aerospace Engineering, September 2012'.
